The shoulder is
the most mobile and versatile joint in the body. It is a relatively
unstable joint, requiring most of its stability from the surrounding
muscles, tendons and ligaments. Consequently the strains placed on the
shoulder can cause damage to these soft tissue structures. Also, degenerative
changes can lead to damage of the joint structures themselves. Shoulder
pain may be local to the joint, referred to areas around the shoulder
or down the arm. Neck problems often refer pain to the shoulder.
