Shin Splints

Shin splints cause pain to be felt along the inner aspect of the shinbone. It is more prevalent in running sports, and can be quite persistent once it starts. The pain tends to come on fairly early in a run, and the athlete cannot normally run through it.

Causes can be:

  • Poor or inappropriate footwear
  • Over pronation at the foot
  • Training errors
  • Tight calf or hamstring muscles
  • Poor core stability

What happens is that the muscles at the front of your leg overwork where they attach to the shinbone. This can lead to micro-trauma and then inflammation.

The pain often settles quickly with rest, but can return as soon a running is resumed

Treatment
Rest is usually the first treatment choice, followed by wearing good footwear, running on soft/flat ground and keeping the calf muscle flexible.

Training then needs to be built back up again very slowly and pain free.
