Mummy MOT

Mummy MOT

Pregnancy and childbirth are unique experiences in any woman’s life which sees your body change in amazing ways. As your baby grows, your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, back and ribs have extra pressure on them and recovery after birth is not always a straightforward process.

Despite this, most women routinely receive little or no guidance about safe physical recovery from pregnancy and labour. Mums usually focus on the needs of baby so that their own recovery takes a back seat. Most women after having had a baby have a weakness in either the tummy or pelvic floor muscles which then creates instability and poor core strength. The result can be back pain, pelvic pain, bladder and bowel weakness.

The time after giving birth is very hectic, and if you get the time to think about yourself and start to think about addressing any physical problems you may have, it is hard to know where to turn for help or how to get started. The Mummy MOT is designed for this reason.

What is a Mummy MOT?

The Mummy MoT is a specialist post-natal assessment suitable from 6 weeks onward, but many mums do not come to see us until much later than this, so there is no time limit. It is performed by Sundeep Watkins (MSc Physiotherapy) who is a Specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist and understands the changes your body has gone through.

The 60 minute assessment will focus on your individual needs, problems, or goals for getting back to a certain activity as a new mum, and includes:

  • Posture and biomechanics alignment check
  • Diastasis Rectus Abdominis check (tummy muscle gap)
  • Pelvic Floor Assessment
  • Pelvic and core stability muscle assessment
  • Exercise or activity specific advice and provision of a rehabilitation programme
  • A written report of the findings and advice which can be used to keep your GP and other relevant health professionals up to date with your condition.

Although there are standard parts of the assessment, it can be tailored to your needs. Whether you just want to know some exercises to help get toned up or want to return to a 5km run, the Mummy MOT is for you.

Following the assessment, further follow up arrangements can be made as needed to ensure you have as much support and guidance as you need.
