The foot is a unique, intricate and mechanically complex structure made up of 26 major bones and associated joints. The efficiency with which the foot functions when walking depends on the way in which those bones and joints move in relation to each other. If things are not working well painful problems are often the result. These painful problems are obviously often in the feet and ankles but may appear in the knees, hips, back, neck and even the jaw. They may manifest themselves as pain, instability, restricted movement or in some cases - fatigue. A podiatric examination involves taking a series of measurements of the feet and legs with the patient lying down and standing. It will also include checking joint movements and assessing muscle strength and flexibility. The way you walk will also be assessed. The most common treatment for these problems is the use of special shoe inserts (orthotics). These assist the feet to function more efficiently. They do this by controlling joint movement and by altering some joint angles to prevent excessive motion. For further details and to book an appointment please contact reception. |
